All Cake, All The Time

January 5, 2010 at 9:01 am

I’ve made about 4 cakes since I last updated – but I only have photos of 3, so here they are!

This was my second cake using Fondant (the first one is the one I don’t have any photos of – it was pretty terrible!). I made it for my mom’s birthday – for some reason she wanted ladybugs and dragonfly’s. Everything is edible – minus the floral wire =)

The next cake, was another birthday cake but for my BF. He’s into tennis so I thought it would be cool to attempt to make a tennis cake! Everything is made out of fondant, and completely edible

The next cake was for cake class – but I made it for New Years Eve. Super fun and colourful and once again all made out of fondant. Excuse the missing piece – I didn’t remember to take photos until it was too late!

I’m done all of my classes now, but for the next 4 weeks I’m taking an extra one on Gum Paste Flowers. We’re not making a cake, but I will be sure to post all of the cool flowers we make!

Cake Decorating – Course 2 Final

November 4, 2009 at 11:39 pm

Today I finished Level 2 of the Wilton Cake Decorating Courses.

I’m pretty proud of my cake this week! I really like the basketweave but I definitely need some practice. Same goes for my rope borders, they seem a little thick!

The coolest part of this cake is that everything is edible. Every single flower can be eaten, it’s awesome!

Next course we’re learning wedding cake techniques and tiered cakes. This is probably the most fun I’ve had ever!

Check out my cake and let me know what you think!

Cake Overload!

October 7, 2009 at 11:02 pm

I’m not going to lie, I’m so incredibly sick of cake!
I’ve made 5 cakes in the last 3 weeks (Granted, one of them got stuck in the pan so I’m not sure if that REALLY counts!), and I’m so glad my next 3 courses only require 1 cake every 3 weeks :)

Here’s some cake pictures to get you drooling ::

Cake Class – Week 3
We had to pipe clown figures. My one clown is kind of falling off because of a cake failure, but it adds character…right?

Next we have a spur of the moment cake for an anniversary. It didn’t turn out as I planned it, but I was working on a crazy timeline and it was my first time using fondant!

Last but certainly not least…

My last cake from the Wilton Course 1 class!
Our task this week was a chocolate cake, with roses. I think it turned out pretty good, I definitely need to work on my roses. Those suckers are hard!

There are tons of photos on my Flickr if you’re interested :)

I’m off to bed, more to come tomorrow!
Happy cake-ing :)

Cake Decorating Class – Week 2

September 25, 2009 at 11:44 am

Look at my cake!!!

This class was basically about getting our piping bags ready and learning some proper techniques.
I learned how to make drop stars, waves, spirals, a wave border and practiced some handwriting!

Next week we’re making a cute little clown cake!
I’m hoping my icing job turns out better, I think I need to work on my icing consistency. It was definitely too stiff last week and it made it very hard to cover.

I also need to stop eating this cake before I have a sugar overload!

Cake Decorating Class – Week 1

September 17, 2009 at 9:03 am

I had my first cake decorating class yesterday!

course1book1

I pretty much want to quit everything in life and just decorate cakes!

Seriously though, I’m taking a cake decorating class at Michaels and it is way more amazing than I thought it would be.
The instructor is a Pastry Chef (did you know there’s a different levels of chefs/bakers? I had no idea!). Essentially she’s so amazing that she can do everything =)
Not only is she great at what she does, but she is hilarious!

I’m going to go buy my supplies today. Thankfully Michael’s has a 50% off coupon I can use to get an amazing cake decorating kit.
I really really want a stand mixer, but they are so expensive! I’ll have to borrow for now!

I’ll be baking/decorating a cake every week, so look forward to some pictures!
